RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and is the process for persons interested in becoming Catholic.
RCIA is the two-year process through which adults learn about the Catholic Faith and enter the Catholic Church
Entry occurs annually at the Easter Vigil (Saturday evening celebration before Easter Sunday).
Previous marriage issues may not be an obstacle.

RCIA is designed for three distinct groups:

  • Those who are un-baptized
  • Those who have been baptized in a non-Catholic Christian faith
  • Baptized Catholics who have never been taught or practiced their Catholic Faith

Phases in the RCIA and approximate times are:

  • Inquiry - no commitment - up to the individual
  • Catechesis - (learning about the Catholic Faith) varies from several months to two years
  • Elect - six weeks prior to Easter
  • Neophyte - seven weeks following Easter

  • Catechumen - an up-baptized person in the catechesis phase who wishes to become a Catholic.
  • Candidates - baptized Christians in the catechesis phase who wishes to become a Catholic.
  • Elect - those in the final six weeks prior to the Easter celebration who will enter the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil.
  • Neophyte - those who entered the Catholic church at the Easter Vigil and are completing the final classes in their journey.
